Retiring EU emissions allowances
Carbon Retirement buys and retires EU Emission Allowances (EUAs) from Phase 2 of the EU Emission Trading Scheme. One EUA represents the right to release one tonne of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
When we purchase EUAs on your behalf, we make a commitment not to sell them. This means that the total number of EUAs available to polluting companies is lower, and therefore the overall emissions allowed for the regulated industries is lower.
Retirement of EUAs forces European industries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions more than they would do otherwise.
As retirement reduces the supply of EUAs, the price of EUAs increases. This encourages companies to invest in low carbon technology.
We buy EUAs on the market that has developed for regulated industries to trade EUAs. We then retire them voluntarily in order to make sure industry can't use them as licences to release carbon dioxide.

Use the options above to work out how many tonnes of carbon you want to retire. You can calculate the emissions associated with flights, driving, and the energy you use at home. If you already know how many tonnes you want to retire, you can enter it directly.
The calculator follows recognised government guidelines. It uses data published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
